Evangelism — What Is Our Role In God’s Mission?

If our last post helped us see the Church as a worshiping, serving, Spirit-filled community, here we will turn our attention outward. The life we’ve received in Christ was never meant to stop with us. It’s meant to flow through us…to others.

Evangelism can feel intimidating. For some, the word brings to mind pressure, awkward conversations, or a sense of inadequacy. But at its core, evangelism is something much simpler and much more personal. It’s the natural overflow of someone who knows Jesus and desires others to know Him, too.

A striking quote attributed to Charles Spurgeon says, “Have you no wish for others to be saved? Then you’re not saved yourself, be sure of that!” While strong, it forces an honest reflection: if we’ve truly encountered the grace of God, shouldn’t we long for others to experience it as well?

So what is our role in God’s mission? Scripture gives us a clear and compelling answer.

The Great Commission: Our Shared Calling

In Matthew 28:18–20, Jesus gives His final command to His disciples:

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations… teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

This is not a suggestion. It is a commission, and every follower of Jesus is included.

Notice what Jesus calls us to do: make disciples. Evangelism is not just about helping someone make a one-time decision. It is about inviting people into a lifelong journey of following Jesus. It is about transformation, not just information.

There is also deep encouragement here. We do not go alone. Jesus reminds us that all authority belongs to Him, and He is with us always. When we step into conversations about faith, we do so backed by His authority and sustained by His presence.

You do not need a title to participate in disciple-making. You simply need a willingness to walk with others, share your story, and point people to Jesus in everyday life.

The Power Behind the Mission: The Holy Spirit

If evangelism depended on our own strength, it would be overwhelming. But God never intended it that way.

In Acts 1:8, Jesus promises:

“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses…”

The mission of God is carried out through the power of God.

The Holy Spirit gives us boldness when we feel afraid, wisdom when we do not know what to say, and compassion for people who are far from God.

At its simplest, a witness is someone who shares what they have seen and experienced. You do not need to have all the answers. You just need to be willing to speak about what Jesus has done in your life. Share how Jesus saved you.

Think back. Have you ever felt a nudge to encourage someone, pray for them, or bring up faith in a conversation? That may have been the Holy Spirit prompting you. Learning to recognize and respond to those moments is a key part of living on mission.

Our Message: The Ministry of Reconciliation

So what exactly are we sharing?

2 Corinthians 5:17–21 gives us the heart of the gospel:

“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation… All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself… and gave us the ministry of reconciliation.”

The message is this: God restores broken people to Himself through Jesus.

Sin separated us from God, but through Christ’s death and resurrection, that separation is removed. Forgiveness is offered. New life is available.

Here is the incredible part. God entrusts this message to us.

Scripture calls us ambassadors for Christ. That means we represent Him. We speak on His behalf. God makes His appeal to the world through ordinary people like you and me.

Evangelism flows from identity. We do not share the message because we have to. We share it because we have been changed by it. We were once far from God, and now we have been brought near. That changes how we see others.

It is worth asking why God chooses to work this way. Why not just speak directly to everyone?

Because relationship matters. God works through people to reach people. Your voice, your story, and your relationships matter more than you might realize.

The Urgency of the Mission

Romans 10:14–17 brings clarity and urgency:

“How are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? … So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.”

People need to hear the gospel in order to believe it.

God could have chosen any method to spread His message, but He chose human messengers. That means there are people in your life who may never hear about Jesus unless someone they trust shares with them.

This is not meant to create pressure, but purpose.

Who in your life might be waiting for someone to bring them good news?

Sometimes we assume someone else will do it. But what if you are the one God has placed in their life for that very reason?

Moving from Fear to Faithfulness

Evangelism is not about having perfect words or flawless theology. It is about faithfulness.

Here is a simple step you can take this week:

Write down the names of two people in your life who do not yet know Jesus.
Pray for them daily.
Ask God for an open door to have a meaningful conversation.

You do not need to force anything. Stay attentive, prayerful, and available.

Often, the biggest barrier is not ability. It is fear. As we lean on the Holy Spirit, fear gives way to boldness, and hesitation turns into obedience.

A Final Invitation

Evangelism is not a burden. It is a privilege. It is joining God in what He is already doing in the world.

We are sent by Jesus.
We are empowered by the Spirit.
We carry the message of reconciliation.
People need to hear.

So here is the question to sit with:

What is one next step you can take this week to move from fear to faithfulness in evangelism?

Take that step. Trust God with the results. Remember that you are never alone in His mission.
